South Carolina's 2004 Hurricanes and Tropical Storms that threatened Hurricane StatusUp-to-date news on weather for this part of South Carolina. September 2004 Hurricane Ivan did not pass over us though we had rain and some tornado damage in the area from the outer bands of the storm. A tornado also hit in Cheraw where I used to live. August 29, 2004 Tropical Storm Gaston We were in the center of the storm, but those further west of us got the most damage. They had more trees down and flash flooding. We had some areas flooded, but only minor damage. August 14, 2004 The eye of Hurricane Charley passed over our house on a Saturday morning. We were in Indiana for my 40th year high school class reunion at the time and got the news by telephone as we talked with a neighbor. The hurricane was minimal, however, and the only damage was limbs broken down and general mess typical of a big rainstorm.
Notable Hurricanes from earlier yearsSeptember 21-22, 1989 Hurricane Hugo was a category four hurricane that caused great destruction to much of South Carolina. Dave and I hadn't met, but we both went through the storm in our own communities. Dave was in Hemingway and I was in Cheraw at the time. Dave was in a harder hit area than I was, but we all had a night we would never forget and many hours of work cleaning up. |
